Hm hm ! Some of you are going to be a little surprised here i guess lol.

I wanted to try something really faithful to the original this time, no realistic setting here. I firmly kept the plane floor and the blank background (well almost^^).

It's really an experimentation at what would be something stylized and HD with the original game setting. I'm not really happy with it, as i'm not really skilled for this, but anyway...

If i was artistic director, and i could hire, or invocate artists, i would have :iconerwinsart: or :iconken-wong: (particularly this art [link] to work on this! But anyway, it was fun to do.

Though Orioto chose this time for a different, more simple technique, it does tend to work in his disfavour, as well in his favour.

Many followers we're expecting something 'traditional' from Orioto, as his work comes as a surprise every time. When i first saw this work, i - as some more of us might have felt - felt dissapointed. Mainly because Orioto's traditional style isn't really used here. The fact that this artwork isn't that different from the looks with the original, makes for a less impressive impact.

It actually doesn't look like a remake this time, but more, just a piece of 2D art. I feel that they're could've been done a lot more, starting off with the background; it's not as detailed as it could be. The blocks have they're 'unique' style, but Nintendo's own 2D style over-shadows Orioto's to be honest.

There are also some positive things; being so overwhelmed every time by Orioto and his make-overs sets a new bar for his next work. I think i (we) need to step a bit back, and accept that some things are meant to be simplistic once in a while, and this artwork is a great example. Though not as spectacular as previous artwork, i still see this as going down memory lane, but not with the 'wow!' effect.

Nintendo should be so lucky as to have you on their payroll. You'd breathe new life into old franchises, with the art alone.

An odd one this. While it's very nice and obviously, as stated by Orioto himself, it is a bit of a departure from his previous works. This is probably my least favorite of all of them but it's still very cool and I do like the different direction. But I love the dream-like romanticized style of previous works. Orioto's works as we remember them not how they actually looked, it's how we see them in our minds thinking back to the good old days...

Can't post an actual critique but...
I think this is a bold new route and I like it. I think this stirs up emotions that make you remember playing this game for the first time.
A classic peace in a more classic kind of style I think.
I do feel that the background could have stood out more without taking away from the beautiful foreground here in this piece though.
But still this is goin' to be a fave from me and I think a lot of other people will be saving this piece as well.

Makes me feel like a kid again. Man, video games like this aren't made anymore, now you need 1080p resolutions, epic soundtrack and story. This game... simplest thing ever. Don't take this the wrong way, but this picture represents simplicity. Simple and easy entertainment. Good job, dude, big fan of your work.

This piece stays true to the original design fairly well but I feel the problem with this is the coloring. One of the things the Mario franchise is known for is the use of color and this piece just doesn't capture the "Mario feeling", color wise. Other wise, it is well put togther piece.

I prefered your other ones much more, mostly because there was a very strong sense of depth.

This one seems really flat, maybe im just being picky because your other works rocked so much, but thats my 2cents :)

It's really great visualy as usual, but this time I didn't like the "level design"... Where the mushroom came from? Why there's a goomba on top of that kind of block? These yellow blocks are the [?] blocks after being hit, aren't they? They are so high and if it was hit from the bottom, I think it would have killed the goomba. The arrangement of the coins are a bit odd too...
I did like everything else, but I didn't feel it looks like a real game like your other paintings...
I think you focused so much on the looks that you forgot about the gameplay.. It's the first time I felt this with your work on games remakes...
Sorry to bother.. I really love your paintings... ^^
