This piece is a testament to what good fan-art represents, you get to see Samus in all her glory doing what she does best.
- Positives - The light hues you used really makes it feel cold with the deep blues and purples giving it the "toxic planet" you were going for.
The coloring work is amazing with subtle differences throughout the piece in shading and blending
The light green used bottom right draws your eye immediately to the Metroid then naturally ramps it down towards Samus.
- Negatives - The two large white areas immediately to the left and right of Samus seem out of place and almost unfinished.
The depth of field is rather harsh close up (as it should be) but then doesn't gracefully blend in throughout the piece, it's as if there's a beautiful painting that has just had a depth of field border applied.
The falling snow doesn't seem random enough for genuine show, the particles look too big and uniform.
- Improvements - I don't get the feeling of movement from the piece, the Metroids seem frozen in the air instead of hurtling towards Samus, in addition the trail from the gun seems oddly a-symmetrical.
The only thing that bothers me is that her arm cannon seems to be on the wrong arm - left instead of right. Otherwise, great use of bright colors. It goes against the dark, brooding nature of Metroid seen in a lot of other Metroid fan art/concepts.
I think in the future it would be safest if you listed your individual resources in your comments when posting your work. That way you can avoid copyright issues, cries of stealing, possible deletion by dA moderators, and it's just plain more professional AND ethical.
You may have shared through other avenues that you commonly use paintovers and official assets, but a first time visitor- like me- to this piece of work won't know that.
Professionalism is key. (Now, your recent journal post wasn't very professional.. X3 )
I love your artwork, I'm not a huge fan of Metroid but this in my opinion is very well done. But what I don't get, is so much hateful criticism against your artwork (outside of DA). It's ridiculous really, especially this piece, as you may know, these crazed metroid fan boys/girls(?) are going ape s@#% over this picture. This angers me because they are trying to "debunk" you as the author would say. This severely pisses me off, as a fellow artist I understand this is fan art! But he says (the author) it's plagiarism, if that's the case all fanart is plagiarism and every artist who draws fanart should be attacked right? But if you are a true artist you understand this is not the case...
I'm terribly sorry for ranting ^_^;;;, I'm sure you've already seen the webpage but if you haven't you should take a look for yourself.
I agree. In the case of copyright blah blah blah...the IMAGE of Metroid, Mario, the Simpsons, ect are all copyrighted. And I don't think practically anybody on DA seeks permission to use their images when making fanart. Which is WHY it's called fan art. You're making art of something that doesn't belong to you.
I could understand if somebody were to say they've made an original character but later it was discovered that they ripped it off of something somebody else made. Then there should be outrage.
But all this anger over FANART is just ridiculous to me. Just do a search for "Final Fantasy" and check out all the people who make direct copies from official images.
Lol I saw that sorry I didn't read that first XD it just really angered me. I'm sorry this has happened to you :c, but ignore them I read your journal they're just over-crazed fans that need a hobby and they are jealous...
Hey there, I favorited your piece, but looking at it more closely, I can see many awkward things about it.
The thing that sticks out the most in this piece are the Metroids. They are too copy-pasted. I have seen that concept art of Andrew Jones's metroid probably a hundred times, and I'm sick of it. You could have easily drawn your own metroids, but nope, you just clipped it out of a pre-existing work and popped in in there. Same goes with Samus. C'mon man, I could filterize/paintover anything that already exists.
The environment is the strong point of this piece, HOWEVER there are some blaring issues. Like, I could instantly tell that those big blue ice/tower-like objects in the background are duplicates of one another. At least the 2 closest to Samus. They need more variety. The camera blur and objects in the foreground is nice, though. I also like the Metroid explosion.
Back down on the duplicating and obvious image ripping, and you'll be golden.
Acually they are not pasted in it. Colors are redone. But the idea is to have the exacxt reference of the original artwork actually yes And for the duplicated elements, that's how the game wold work if real time. This is videogame concept art !
